DJ David Rodigan may look like a stockbroker or an insurance salesman but he’s a reggae superstar, both in his homeland of England and in Jamaica. After hearing Millie Small’s massive ska hit “My Boy Lollipop,” Rodigan fell in love with every shade of Jamaican music. He became a DJ at the age of 15, but toyed with the idea of becoming an actor before Radio London gave him a shot in 1978.
He’s been on the air ever since, spending over a decade at Capital Radio before moving to Kiss FM. Through the years he’s collected a massive amount of dubplates made exclusively for his Rodigan Sound System. He clashed with every sound system of note — Stone Love, Kilimanjaro, and Bodyguard to name a few — and was the official tour DJ for Shinehead.
Besides a handful of mixtapes and DVD releases of his sound clashes, he also helped assemble the 2007 release The Kings of Reggae compilation for the Rapster label plus the 2008 release Real Authentic Reggae, Vol. 1 for BBE.

The internationally renowned Hot 8 Brass Band from New Orleans is one of the most enduring and innovative groups in the Crescent City lineage. At home they are among the most popular funk-style brass bands to participate in community parades and funerals, blending elemental influences from the Dirty Dozen and Rebirth brass bands with contemporary R&B, rap, and bounce.
The band was founded in 1995 when sousaphone player Bennie “Big Peter” Pete merged the best players from the Looney Tunes and High Steppers brass bands. They issued their debut long-player Rock with the Hot 8 in 2005, featuring a version of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” that has become the group’s de facto anthem.
Hot 8 was featured prominently in Spike Lee’s 2006 HBO documentary When the Levees Broke and later signed to the U.K. label Tru Thoughts. The band began touring internationally, playing their own gigs and opening for artists including Lauryn Hill. Their second long-player, Life & Times Of…, featured well-received covers, including a dynamite version of The Specials’ “Ghost Town.”
They celebrated their 20th anniversary with Vicennial: 20 Years of the Hot 8 Brass Band in 2015, a set of brand new tracks and newly recorded versions of repertoire tunes. Their fifth full-length, On the Spot, offered a host of originals alongside a steamy reading of Sade’s “Sweetest Taboo.” Despite facing immense personal and community hardships in New Orleans, the Hot 8 continue to soldier on, bringing their unique, creative sound to festivals and dance clubs worldwide.
